What We Can,t Be Told ?

I have in all my life never  seen a place run like the Chippewas of Rama, There is so much that we are not allowed to know. Makes me wonder if they no what accountability's and transparency means.  When people act this way makes you wonder if they have some thing to hide. I asked for a phone directory and was told its a privacy issues . We pay for the employees but we cant have a list of phone numbers what is that all about are we not entitled to no who they are and who we are forking out are cash too. I ask who we donate money to, no answer i ask what political party's we are donating money to no answer.  As the share holders  of Rama we are entitled to this information i would think.

  1. Why can't we be told?

...maybe because the STAKEHOLDERS ie Government, and Casino operator...want business to run smoothly and so they have lawyers restrict Chief and council in communications...via "confidentiality agreements" and such to avoid exposure of any negatives that are connected with the casino, AND to maximize and centralize control FURTHER from the people most harmed by such negatives.

in short, the less you know, the less you can do about it, and the less you can say...the less power you have.

  2. As stakeholders in Rama, we are entitled to know details of our First Nation. The reason we dont, imo, is due to the style of the Chief. Whatever this confidentiality agreement is that is signed upon taking office, she owns Rama, she owns Council, she owns staff. By "owns" l mean she's in charge and no one (Council or staff) dares to speak against her. I remember when she was originally campaigning 10 years or so ago, l worked at MASK, and she came in there talking about transparency and fairness. @ The Children are our Future, l think you're right in that she has no clue what that means. She still speaks like that today, and we are worse off information wise than we were before she won her election on promise of casino cash distribution.

We are entitled to know what's going on in our community. But let the record show that this Chief's leadership style, and subsequently the Council's style, is not nishnaabe.

Until we have a change in leadership, we are in a no-win situation. It's not just sad for band members, its sad for Rama, our home.

  3. good observation Tracey. sounds like a couple of reasons that info is being blocked...external loyalties to biz partners AND leaderSHIT control freaks.
