Chief Yellowhead Island
At the meeting another issue was asked about and that was Chief Island formally know as Yellow head island, and the amount if boats around the island. we wanted to deal with the matter when we had an Environment Group. But we got no where like many of are concerns . The island was classed by the MNR as a Class One Wet land back the the Band was told to keep do something about the boats . When Rama had an Environment Assessment done on all of our land and islands same protect shoreline, and restrict access to the island . We need to protect the spawning grounds around the island.. Chief Yellow heads people lived on the island in 1827, 1828,1829 in 1829 a school and two cabins were constructed.. Before that the Huron were on the island. There are may graves and we no that there is also graves of the Huron.

Im guessing (since no one from C&C responded, or maybe theyre not allowed to) that C&C arent interested in protecting the Island cuz there's no money to be made. In fact, protecting the Island would cost money.
ReplyDeleteIts pretty sad. Maybe if the City of Orillia was interested in doing something about the damage at Chief Island, they would jump right on it, you know, since they want to look good in the eyes of the outside (of Rama) world.
Just wondering about the status of Ship Island and the distruction of this island caused by the comarands (kind of Duck),not sure of spelling, But since nothing was done to to protect this island and the increasing population of this bird, it makes me wonder what kind of impact will they have on Chief and Horseshoe Islands now that they are a more suitable nesting area for these birds that have over populated and killed Ship Island. Dont get me wrong as they are starting to nest on both islands.
DeleteWill C&C sit back and let Chief Island go to ruin and be over run by these birds? Ship Island is dead and the smell of bird shit is almost unbearable. The water around the island is green all the rocks are covered with a green slime, thereby making fish spawning grounds none existant. The pickeral and white fish have moved on to find new spawning areas. If these birds are allowed to do, to Chief as they had done to Ship we can kiss this scared Island good bye. There will no longer be a place to camp, picnic or swim if these birds get a foot hold there and render this Island useless. Then we wouldnt have to worry about protecting, restricting access or the boaters because no one would want to use it. If allowed to go unchecked, as Ship Island was, we would have no one to blame but ourselves. Is it possible that we have already lost the battle for Chief Island to the increasing population of these birds? If not, then left unchecked these birds will do irreparable damage to Chief Island and the waters that surround it, as they have to to Ship Island.
Im sure that the cottagers on Horseshoe will not allow this to happen to their Island. Rama does not have the luxury of time or a presence on Chief Island to stop the migration of these birds from destroying what truly is a place of beauty, a place of memories past present and hopefully future.
The battle for Chief Island is now. As with every battle, there is a cost factor. As I see it, the cost to do battle with these birds out weighs any costs, no matter what the cost or risk involved to ensure that Chief Island remains priceless.
Hey Joe , The cost would be very little as egg oiling would prevent the Cormorants from hatching, A vegetable oil or mineral oil is used which are non- toxic, We did try to get the oil going or we wanted to cull the birds, But Rama went with the noise- makers. cheryle snache
ReplyDeleteWhat did they have a council meeting on the island.(noise makers) Just kidding.
DeleteI believe that would have any im pact on the population of these bird but but whats to stop them from migrating to the other islands. Who would monitor this progress and what would the costs be to maintain this yr after yr after yr till the birds move on to other nesting grounds. As I said their moving now to the other islands, not sure how that can be rectified or the birds contained. Theires a job creation idea for the Band to consider. Call it a environmental worker or something like that, or would that be part of the by-law dept's job?
