Rama First Nation Members and Employees-A message from the Band Manager

Given the state of the global economy, leadership and administration of the Chippewsas of Rama First Nation have been looking at numerous initiatives to reduce the First Nations overall budgets. After careful review of the funds disbursed in December the recommendation to discontinue the $150.00 Christmas Gift was accepted. This will reduce the overall 2110 /2011 operating buget by $ 130,000.00. As you will recall the $ 150.00 Christmaas Gift began in the early 1980's to assist many families during the Christmaas Season. As a community and employer, we all have become much more prosperous and do not face the same challenges of the past. We do acknowledge there are still families who require assistance and in an effort to give back, we encourage every employee and community member to donate time, money or a gift this season. The decision to eliminate the $ 150.00 gift was necessary as we  strive to find ways to reduce the overall budget.

reminds me of another, whos name has become synonymous with the lack of Christmas spirit...

"At this festive season of the year Mr Scgoore" Said the gentleman taking up his pen, "it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute that suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessities: hundreds of thousands are in want of common comfort sir."

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge

"Plenty of prisons,"said the gentleman laying down the pen.

"and the union workhouses are they still operational?" asked Scrooge

"They are still, returned the gentleman, though I wish I could say they were not."

The treadmill and the poor law still in full vigour, then?" said Scrooge

    "Both very busy sir."

"Oh I was afraid from what you said at first that something had happened to stop them in their useful course," said Scrooge "I'm very glad to hear it!"

Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind to the multitude" returned the gentleman,"a few of us are endeavoring to raise a fund to buy the poor some meat and drink and means of warmth. We choose this time because it is a time when Want is keenly felt, and abundance rejoiced.

What shall we put you down for?"

    "Nothing " Scrooge replied.

    "You wish to remain anonymous?"

" I wish to be left alone.said Scrooge "since you asked me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer."
"I don't make merry myself at Christmas, and I can't afford to make idle people merry.I help support the establishments I have mentioned--they cost enough:and those who are badly off must go there."

"Many can't go there:and many would rather die."

"If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.."

  2. Actually, the savings to the band were $130,000.00 NOT $13,000.

  3. Due to some members phone calls, e-mails to Chief and Council, asking that the $150 Christmas cheques be provided to those in need, the people on welfare lined up at the health centre recently to pick up their $200 food voucher.
