Report On Bear From Rama Police.

Rama Police service has been called to investigate bear sightings on a number of occasions, at the ojibway Bay marina, in the area of Willi son side road, close to the employee entrance of Casino Rama, and  Grandmother Road .Officers investigating some of the incidents reported that the bear hesitated to move and appeared to be unafraid of people and cars. On June 6 early in the morning reports of a bear at the entrance of casino Rama were received. Officers were unable to frighten the bear away with engine revving, use of the Horn and sirens or air shots and determined that in view of recent reports and the bears unresponsiveness to their efforts, it presented an immediate danger to the community . Shots were fired at the bear but it fled into the bush and officers believed they had missed it. The immediate area was searched but the bear appeared to have fled the area unharmed.. On June 16 it was reported that  a dead bear was located near the maintenance department yard. The location is consistent with reports of where the bear was last seen  so it  is likely that it succumbed to injuries sustained by the officer,s shots. The bear had an MNR tag and this incident was reported to them by Rama Police Servicrs. Under the circumstances, MNR had no concerns about the action taken by the Rama Police. It is unfortunate that the bear was not located on the day of the incident but officers did not find any evidence to indicate that the bear had been injured during their search of the immediate area, Community safety is our key priority. Extreme measures are the last resort in any circumstance. This particular bear had been sighted in the area on a number of occasions and its peculiar behaviour was cause for concern. We are also grateful that none of our community members were harmed although we do understand that at least one dog was seriously injured by a bear and had to be euthanized.  Rama Police officers have been trained in MNR guidelines on how handle bear sightings,They were first trained last spring and a review was conducted at the commencement of this spring. This is in keeping with appropriate protocols for community safety . Arrangements for the Rama Culture Dept. to preform the appropriate ceremony were initiated and burial at the site was facilitated for the bear.

  1. What a good report it covers everything that people want to know. It also covers the unfortunate demise of a bear. I personally want to believe this is true and not just words to justify a truly sad incident. I hope that because of this unfortunate incident that it brought to light some important meanings and understanding of respecting the life of our creatures on earth. I have the utmost respect for our police officers and want to believe the best in them.

  2. Bull shit it goes to show you there was time to call the MNR and have the small bear traped, In stead they shot it and left it to suffer. What a joke.

  3. This is not what the Rama police told me when i called, and i also talk to the MNR , they didnt no the bear was shot and left to die. They would have come out and trapped the bear if they had been called is what they told me. We no what happened it was shot and left to die they can put what ever spin they want on it. I just hope it never happens again. Rama can do more to stop the bears from coming into the village. such as a fence in landfill, steel garbage bins and people need to put there garbage out the day of pick up. 30 % of garbage in land fills is wet garbage we need to compost. We have talked about these issues for years when we had the enviormental group still nothing has change. over the over the past 12 years. What do you do to get things done?

  4. Well there you go. I wanted to believe the report. But from what I am reading above these words were not the truth. I guess its more important to try and justify wrong doing instead of admitting a mistake was made and poor judgement was used.Sure doesn't look good on you. What a shame. I agree with comments made by person above. Get together people! So many try and resolve situations such as this and unfortunately don't get the needed support.

  8. The "report" is just SPIN. Justification, minimization and denying.

Justification:(saying the "bear was unresponsive" and therefore "an immediate danger to the community" ... REALLY? Are the cops psychic mind readers? Did they know the bear was getting ready to eat a human? I think not. They are just covering their asses.

Minimizing: Furthermore, saying the police are "trained in MNR guidelines to handle bear sightings" is an attempt to gain public confidence. Why? because errors were made. I find this disturbing comment very obvious because because of the deflection used prior stating "MNR had no concerns about the action taken by the Rama Police..." which is simply an attempt to MINIMIZE the damage by inferring "if MNR doesn't care, why should citizens care about the killing of the bear?"

Denial: The most effective way to avoid inquiry and public outrage is to DENY anything WRONG ever happened. By using justification, minimizing and USING the MNR "quote" post mortem...we can easily deduce that this "report" is not concerned with TRUTH or IMPROVED PROCESS...but is in reality DAMAGE CONTROL.

  10. What I get from this report: Do not appear "unresponsive or peculiar" or you know the consequences. Scary!

  11. I agree, Chief and Council would have more respect if they could just admit a wrong has taken place and start cleaning it up. Look at what happened with the Tylenol scare, and you see Tylenol still in business. Also, where is the safety in letting a wounded baby bear run through the community? Totally unacceptable. The bear deserved better, the people deserve better.

  12. Did anyone stop to think that the bear was frightened of all the engine reving and horn blowing....probably felt surrounded and didnt know which way to run...so very unfortunate that it was used for target practice and then to succume to its injuries...forgive them brother bear.

  13. yes, it makes it hard to do things better...when they can't admit error in the first place eh? Just shows with all the corporate culture happening, they are learning how to lie like corps too!

  14. that last one is a good comment. It speaks to many truths. There is a very fear based energy in Rama. Many jealousies, much animosity. It requires balance of which there is very little of and the leadership doesn't know how to promote that. The blind are leading the blind it's so sad. The few who speak up about stuff are outcast and ostrasized for it. That's colonization folks. Alive and well that's for sure. Assimilation and colonization are on the agenda at the hands of Rama's very own leadership, and nobody really seems to care.

  15. I think its funny how so many people are quick to judge, when not any of you were in the situation at the time of the incident.

Nobody can tell what they were thinking at the time of the bear encounter. There have been so many bear encounters over the years and this is the first time, this action has been taken. Its not like its a regular thing. The copper made an action that he thought was appropriate for what the bear was doing at the time.

I defiantly do not think he killed the bear because he is a hater. C'mon guys think before you judge
